GRAIL is a biotech company focused on early cancer detection through a simple blood test. They were ready to launch its flagship multi-cancer early detection test, Galleri™, which has the ability to detect more than 50 types of cancer from a simple blood draw. GRAIL tasked Audacity to create the brand messaging and develop compelling brand creative to activate a series of launch assets. We developed a concept that focused on removing the various uncertainties around potentially having cancer. The Galleri test removes the ‘What ifs’. It has the potential to remove the worries and questions around the possibility of having cancer. It can detect multiple types of cancer early and offer peace of mind.

We pulled this concept through in a video that sheds light on the emotional journey many patients and their loved ones experience over the course of the fight against cancer. We follow the storyline of a female who at first seems nostalgic over her late husband. When she steps outside and sees her husband happy and working diligently in their garden, we are uplifted by this reality that was made possible with Galleri. Diagnosing cancer as early as possible can save lives.

I had the pleasure of storyboarding and envisioning each scene of this video and mapping out what would make sense visually frame-by-frame. To pull emotion, we focused on a woman waking up to find an empty bed next to her, reminiscing and getting ready for her day. I imagined actions she would do from her bed and down to the kitchen, which entailed dressing up, walking down a hallway, passing familiar rooms and a “gallery” of memories against the wall as she walked down stairs. This was all conceptualized before casting the models and scouting for the location. I had the chance to update the storyboard to reflect the casted actors, while you can see slight adjustments were made on the day of shooting. We weren’t able to mount a gallery of photos to the rented space but was able to still infuse the memories and feelings desired throughout. I really enjoyed the process of sketching out each moment and seeing it come to life with real people.

We also developed an animated video for Grail to explain the technology behind this test and it’s process, to help both clinicians and patients know when this test should be used, what their results will look like, and what to do with them. We are taken through a journey of a patient as cues appear as reminders to be proactive of his health, as well as learn more about the Galleri testing process. This video was meant to help establish and launch the test while encouraging both patients and healthcare providers to check for cancer routinely and raise awareness that this simple blood test is now an option for patients to request from their physicians.

At the beginning of this project, I compiled a few art style / mood board options for the client to choose from, in which animations could be portrayed as. They chose a minimalistic sketch-like direction which I digitally drew and edited to their liking. The end result feels approachable with a subtle human touch. I made sure to feature the new color palette we developed for them appropriately, highlighting key features in primary colors, selecting music that is tranquil yet warm and choosing a voice-over actor with a nurturing quality to blend all the branding and messaging together in an inviting way.
